New job: associate provost for Institutional Development

Provost Jean-Lou Chameau has named Jack Lohmann as Georgia Tech’s first associate provost for Institutional Development and chair of the newly created Council for Institutional and Academic Program Review and Accreditation. Lohmann, who currently serves as the associate dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Engineering and as a professor in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, will continue to perform those duties as well.

In his new role, Lohmann will lead institutional and academic program reviews and their accreditations, particularly as they relate to major accreditations — such as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) — as well as Board of Regents program reviews. His involvement will also extend into the development and accreditation of the extended learning programs Tech is creating, such as its Regional Engineering Program (GTREP) and overseas programs in France and Singapore.

The Council will serve to provide guidance and coherence in Georgia Tech’s preparedness to fulfill current and emerging accreditation requirements and to promote effective approaches to evaluate and improve academic programs. Based upon Lohmann’s recommendations, the Council will be formed by the end of August, drawn from both the academic and administrative constituents of Georgia Tech.

“A university’s accreditation is central to its reputation,” said Chameau. “Jack’s commitment to Georgia Tech will ensure the institutional initiatives being developed conform to the highest academic standards.”

In order to maintain accreditation, schools are periodically evaluated on their ability to maintain appropriate standards for their graduates to gain admission to other reputable institutions of higher learning or to achieve credentials for professional practice. SACS is the recognized regional accrediting body in 11 states for institutions of higher education that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral degrees. ABET accredits more than 2,500 engineering, engineering technology, computing and applied science programs at more than 550 colleges and universities nationally.

“Georgia Tech is highly regarded for its leadership in developing and implementing innovative academic programs with effective approaches for their evaluation and accreditation,” Lohmann said. “I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with our faculty, staff and students to further enhance Tech’s institutional initiatives for academic excellence, particularly in the area of extending learning.”
