Police Department names emergency preparedness director

A tornado has touched down near the residence halls. There is major structural damage, the roof is partially gone and there is a high probability of students trapped in the rubble. In addition, the storm has crippled communication and transportation lines, causing confusion and panic.

Andy Altizer will be heavily involved with risk analysis and planning for the Georgia Tech campus.

This kind of scenario isn’t pleasant to think about, but it can occur. For several years, administrators at Georgia Tech have been committed to providing emergency response plans to ensure the safety of the campus community.

Earlier this month, the Georgia Tech Police Department hired Andrew Altizer to plan for the unexpected. As Georgia Tech’s director of Emergency Preparedness, he’s the new point person in coordinating the campus response to crisis.

Among other things, he’ll be responsible for reviewing and updating emergency action plans, as well as developing exercise plans for the types of situations Tech might experience. He comes to Georgia Tech following four years managing the state’s critical infrastructure program for the Georgia Office of Homeland Security (GEMA).

He also has experience in a collegiate environment, having previously served five years as assistant dean of community life at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta.

Georgia Tech Police Chief Teresa Crocker is pleased Altizer has brought his management skills to campus.

“This position focuses on the all-hazards approach Georgia Tech is taking when it comes to emergency preparedness,” she said. “Andy will be working with departments across campus to help them get ready for whatever incident might come their way. I believe his background and experience with GEMA will certainly be an asset to Georgia Tech.”
