Investiture plans solidify

The Presidential Investiture for President Bud Peterson will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, in the Alexander Memorial Coliseum. Following the ceremony, the afternoon will include open discussion sessions for the campus community on topics that will be central to Georgia Tech’s next strategic plan.

These events will denote a special and memorable day in the Institute’s history, and many students have expressed an interest in attending the Investiture Ceremony and related celebratory activities, which will extend beyond the “no-class” hour of 11 a.m. to noon. To accommodate students wishing to participate in this exciting day, faculty members with classes scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. are asked to arrange out-of-class assignments for those students.

IAC dean search committee report

The Ivan Allen Dean Search Committee held its first meeting in late July. Bill Funk, of the national executive search firm William Funk & Associates, suggested a timeline for the search that would conclude the process in early 2010.

Committee Chair Doug Allen led a discussion of the process and asked the committee to comment on the position description. Nominations of exceptional prospective candidates should be sent to krisha.creal@rwilliamfunk.com.

Faculty group considers trimesters

The Office of the Provost has established a faculty task force to look at the feasibility of adopting a trimester system as the academic calendar at Tech. This would establish the summer session as identical to the fall and spring semesters, thus allowing students to take more courses each academic year that fit into their curriculum.

Advantages and disadvantages of such a calendar are being identified. Faculty and students will be surveyed once a proposal is developed. Enrollment in the summer is only 38 percent of the fall enrollment.

Committee members include Sue Ann Allen, Jung Choi, Joseph L.A. Hughes, Donna Llewellyn, Carole Moore, Daniel Morrison, Charles Parsons, Reta Pikowsky, Carol Senf, Anderson Smith and Brian Stone.

Office of the President staff support

Administration and Finance will be seeking a proactive, resourceful, and efficient professional for the position of Assistant Vice President.

The AVP will be a key support position for Executive Vice President of Administration and Finance Steve Swant as well as the Office of the President.

The position will support the agenda of the A&F Division through effective communications, coordination, problem-solving and management of special projects.

Employees can audit courses

A new policy allows full-time regular employees at Tech to audit one course during a semester without tuition costs if space remains after the student registration period.
Approval to audit is required from the course instructor and the employee’s supervisor.

As part of an ongoing effort for enhanced communication by the Office of the President, Office of the Provost and Office of the Executive Vice President for Administration and Finance, this feature provides a brief snapshot of issues and projects of interest to the campus community.

Carnegie News Briefs will be included in the first publication date of each month. Questions can be directed to Jennifer Herazy.
