Find phone numbers with white pages online

Dewey Baxter and Toni Mills
Office of Information Technology

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) encourages faculty, staff and students to use BellSouth’s white pages online. Using the online version is more environmentally friendly and cuts the cost of distributing the paper directories. OIT hopes that users will find it easier and more efficient to use and aims to substantially reduce the number of phonebooks ordered for next year.

This year, Georgia Tech ordered more than 19,500 copies of the 1999 BellSouth White Pages, making Tech the number one single consumer of printed directories in metropolitan Atlanta.

The online version of The Real White Pages provides an alternative. It is accessible from a Web browser and is available on the Georgia Tech Intranet server. The Real White Pages provides users with online access to all Atlanta white pages (including residential, business and government listings), as well as listings from other cities around the southeast such as Orlando and Miami.

Last October, OIT asked various faculty and staff members to help evaluate the product. Due to the positive feedback, OIT began providing the free resource to the campus in February. The only negative feedback targeted the lack of a Macintosh or Unix version of the White Pages application required to view the listings. According to BellSouth officials, a Macintosh version will be available this month.

Until a Macintosh or Unix version is available, Mac and Unix users do have a way around the problem. Macintosh users can run the White Pages application by installing Connectix Virtual PC™. Virtual PC allows Mac users to run the latest PC software on their Macs. Unix users can run similar emulation products such as Wabi, WINE, SoftWindows 95 or VM Ware.

To download the free application, go to http://phonebook.gatech.edu and follow the instructions for downloading and installation. For more information, see the White Page FAQ at http://phonebook.gatech.edu/faq.html. If you encounter problems installing or running the client, you can call the BellSouth Helpdesk at 800-993-6041 or send e-mail to techsupport@realpages.com.

The electronic White Pages are not a replacement for the current printed Yellow Pages. However, BellSouth’s online Real Yellow Pages are available at www.yp.bellsouth.com.

BellSouth also plans to provide the Calendar Year 2000 version of the White Pages on a CD to those who prefer this media to online or paper versions. It is not yet available, however.

OIT encourages Tech employees to try the online version now so that a decision can be made in the fall regarding the number of printed directories or CDs needed.
