Gregory named Metro-Atlanta Engineer
of the Year in Government

Georgia Tech’s list of teaching honors continues to grow with the naming of Dr. Rita Gregory as the 1999 Engineer of the Year in Government by the All Metro-Atlanta Engineering Organizations.

The award, presented by the Georgia Engineering Center, is based on contributions to professional organizations; engineering achievements; research and education; civic and humanitarian activities; and endorsements. A committee of professional engineers evaluated the nominees. Gregory and winners in six other categories were honored.

Gregory holds dual appointments in the Building Construction Program, College of Architecture, and the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She joined the faculty at Georgia Tech in 1995 after completing a distinguished career with the United States Air Force.

According to Dean Thomas Galloway, College of Architecture, this award for Gregory is special in at least two ways. “On the one hand it reflects the significant investment that Dr. Gregory has made in interrelating her teaching and research to the issues of the design and building industry—particularly government and public policy,” Galloway said. “But on another, it is a reflection of her outstanding ability to help the College of Architecture, the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Construction Research Center better integrate and coordinate their outreach efforts. On both counts, we could not be more pleased in having Dr. Gregory as a member of the faculty of Georgia Tech.”

At Tech, Gregory facilitated a meeting between Delta Air Lines, Warner Robins Air Force Base and Lockheed Martin Corp. to coordinate environmental compliance and pollution prevention efforts through the Construction Research Center. She was also chosen to provide independent review and assessment of all Department of Defense Research and Development. After the review, Gregory emphasized the national value of research assets and initiated efforts for universities to have better access to research facilities.

Gregory has also worked in 16 European locations, China, Vietnam and Cambodia to import emerging technologies for environmental and rehabilitation applications. She established international partnerships in such diverse areas as a high-speed data bus for environmental mapping and remediation; retrofitting of “sick” buildings; and economic analysis of sustainable industries to relieve unemployment.

Linda Thomas, a Ph.D. student in the College of Architecture said, “Dr. Gregory is very student oriented, and she has given me a path to follow. She has given me very good advice about my research; she has a good understanding of what is practical and useful. I’m honestly just a big fan of hers.”

Gregory holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from North Georgia College, a master’s degree in personnel management from Golden Gate University, and a doctorate in civil engineering and construction management from the University of Florida.

In 1997 Gregory won the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and in 1995 she won the United States Air Force Sustained Superior Service Award.
